Our Programs
Middle School
Ages 12 through 14 (7th-8th grade)
Middle School is not simply "older elementary." The DHMC Middle School is designed for the very specific educational, psychological and physical needs of the early adolescent. Our program provides opportunities for adolescents to be self-confident and gain self-knowledge. Also, adolescents are provided with an opportunity to belong to a small, safe community. The Montessori philosophy and method are followed and blended with the teaching of skills needed for high school and their personal future. The middle school staff is educated and experienced at working at this level.
In addition to a rigorous middle school curriculum, students manage two businesses; the DHMC Middle Mart and the hot lunch program. Students also provide audiovisual support for school music programs and plays. Community service is encouraged and expected at the middle school level. After school sports are also available and include soccer, volleyball and basketball.
Students entering the middle school program will work on math skills, literature analysis, and foreign language during the summer. Students attend one time per week for one hour each time (a total of six hours). The purpose of "summer school" is to keep math skills sharp, practice reading and writing and help to determine placement for the fall semester. It also introduces the students to the middle school environment.
Graduates from the DHMC middle school transition well to area high schools. Recent graduates are attending Mercy High School, University of Detroit Jesuit, Cranbrook, Dearborn High School Science and Technology program, Detroit Country Day, Marian High School, Catholic Central, Brother Rice, Plymouth-Canton high schools and Divine Child. DHMC provides opportunities to visit local high schools and also provides assistance with applications and admissions procedures.
Class hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Before and after school hours are available.
